November 26, 2014, Capoeira is granted a special protected status as “intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO. In Gatos, this martial art and dance, created by the slaves in colonial Brazil hundreds of years ago is still practiced today by their descendants, and serves them, as well, as a way out of the life of poverty.
