April 3, 1897 film pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumiere screen a series of films shot in Ottoman Palestine. Not only were these some of the earliest films ever shot, including what is possibly the first depiction of camera movement in cinema history (in “Leaving Jerusalem by Railway”), they also gave a glimpse into life before the British Mandate and the State of Israel. In Israel: A Home Movie, home movies made by private individuals, beginning in the 1930s, document their personal and family lives alongside historic events.
