April 16, 1931, Rachel the Poetess, who would become a national poet of Israel, dies at the age of 40. Her poems reflected a simplistic and naturalistic Hebrew and collections of her poetry are still popular today, decades after her death. It is through Rachel’s poems that the religious Yael will be drawn into a world of literature that she had not previously known, straining her marriage in Hallel.
