October 10, 1899 African-American inventor Issac R. Johnson patents the bicycle frame. The basic design found in his patent has not changed much over 100 hundred years later. In Sugarless, a young boy preparing for his Bar Mitzvah is attacked while riding his bicycle. Arriving home, he confronts his blind father, who cannot see his pain. He will learn there are other ways of observation.
