    On 1st January 1955, the Special Marriage Act of 1954 goes into effect. Providing a special form of marriage for the people of India and all Indian nationals in foreign countries, irrespective of the religion or faith followed by either party, it essentially allows for civil marriage and divorce. Conversely in Israel where divorce is dealt with according to orthodox Jewish law, the Kafkaesque process of divorce provides the fodder for Sentenced to Marriage (Mekudeshet)
