Designated Area for Stateless Refugees in Shanghai

Shanghai, February 18, 1943. Japanese authorities declare a “Designated Area for Stateless Refugees” and order Jewish refugees who arrived after 1937 to move within three months. About half of the approximately 16,000 refugees, who had found a means of livelihood and residence outside the ‘designated area’ were forced to leave their homes and businesses for a second time. It is here we meet Rina, the hero of the animated A Jewish Girl in Shanghai.
