    5 December 1955, The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations merge and form the AFL–CIO. The largest federation of unions in the United States, at its peak its membership stood at nearly 20 million. On a more modest front, as Santiago, Chile modernizes its transportation system, Hardy, a knickknack seller, works to gather 2000 of his colleagues to survive the change in The Power of Speech.
