Marie Curie announces the discovery of new element – Radium

December 12, 1898, Marie Curie and her husband and research partner Pierre announce the discovery of a new element which they name “radium”, from the Latin word for “ray”. In the course of their research they would also coin the term “radioactivity”, laying the groundwork for our understanding of physics and chemistry, blazing trails in oncology, technology, medicine, and nuclear physics, to name a few.
