    On August 30, 1991 ahead of the official dissolution of the USSR, the Republic of Azerbaijan declares independence. Following the declaration, in Qırmızı Qəsəbə, believed to be the world’s only all Jewish town outside of Israel, the population descends from the roughly 18,000 during the communist era, to 3,598 due to emigration. In I am a Mountain Jew a group of these young Mountain Jews who immigrated to Israel many years ago, embark on a journey to explore and connect with their roots.
